New book explores the dynamics of cultural transfer between the francophone Maghreb and the West

This edited volume, Passages francophones du Maghreb et transfert culturel, brings together six researchers from the University of Rabat and the University of Stockholm to explore the dynamics of cultural transfer between the francophone Maghreb and the West.

The chapters examine Maghrebi travellers’ perspectives on the West, representations of francophone Maghrebi literatures in Sweden, the Maghreb’s contribution to postcolonial theory, the relationship between Maghrebi writers and institutional Francophonie, the translingual configuration of francophone literary space, and female corporeality as a locus of interculturality in francophone Maghrebi literatures.

Drawing on the framework of cultural transfer theory, this book sheds new light on the mediation of francophone Maghrebi literatures and culture, bringing to the fore various intersections and transformations. Focusing particularly on exchanges between the Maghreb and Europe, it highlights the circulation, negotiation and resemantisation of concepts, ideas and themes between North and South. Given the long history of cultural and linguistic exchanges across the Mediterranean basin, the Maghreb offers a particularly rich site for investigation from the perspective of cultural transfer.
