The collaboration between Stockholm University, UiT The Artic University of Norway and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is a researcher-led and non-commercial initiative for open publishing, initiated in May 2023.
For several years, both nationally and internationally, there has been a shift towards open science. The goal for Swedish universities is to have converted to an open science system by 2026 at the latest, according to the Swedish government’s research proposal 2020/21:60.
By the end of the year 2024, all research articles written by researchers at institutions in Norway shall be available in open access, according to a 2017 decree by the Norwegian government.
Since its first publication in 2014, Stockholm University Press (SUP) has been a way for researchers to publish openly accessible and peer-reviewed works. SUP has published books and journals with authors both from Stockholm University and from other universities. To merely publish books and articles from researchers from its own university has never been the goal.
In May 2023 Stockholm University started a collaboration with two Norwegian universities in order to complement each other’s competences and research areas. Stockholm University, UiT The Arctic University of Norway and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has since then a Nordic collaboration for open publishing.
Johanne Raade, Library Director at UiT, describes the collaboration as:
“A researcher-led and non-commercial initiative for open publishing”.
The collaboration means that SUP opens up for these external parties to start editorial advisory boards for book series and for editors to submit proposals for journals to be added to the Press platform.
Sigurd Eriksson, Library Director at NTNU says:
“This collaboration is an opportunity for us to offer more professional services than we have today”
Publishing service staff from NTNU and UiT meet regularly with the SUP Team and the Norwegian institutions are also represented in the Publishing Committee of SUP.
