The book Comparing the place of experts during the first waves of the COVID-19 pandemic grew out of interdisciplinary network with the aim to compare the effects of the pandemic on political discourse and practice.
The editors of this book, Christophe Premat, Jean-Michel De Waele and Michel Perottino, brought together contributions from researchers on the way in which experts were mobilised to justify difficult political decisions.
The book shows the emergence of forms of medical populism that challenge the validity of certain decisions, with popular heroes preaching alternative decisions. But it also showed that in some cases complex mechanisms were put in place to validate decisions at several levels through the creation of committees and task forces.
The selection of countries concerned offers a relatively representative panorama of the place of experts within different political systems. The methodologies of discourse analysis, political science and media studies offer an original perspective on the role of expertise during the first waves of the pandemic.
The book is aimed for researchers that are interested in how the discourse of experts is produced. It also targets practitioners that want to know more about the perception of the place of experts in the press.
